I just gave Lightroom 3 beta a try and I have to say that the new noise algorithm is far superior to ACR 5.6 with any number of additional noise reducing techniques in post. Using the default setting of 25 it suppresses almost all of the color noise. Only thing that is left are a few color blotches here and there and a lot of fine grain. I do like the look and feel of the grain. Sharpness and none noise colors are retained.
After resizing an ISO 12800 shot it appears much sharper than what sRAW can generate. Still if you run an sRAW shot through Light Room 3 beta there is hardly any color noise left at all. (other than grain) I am very impressed with LR 3 beta\'s noise reduction. I cant wait until the technology trickles down to ACR so I can be more productive. In the mean time, its worth the extra effort!
I just updated my previous test to reflect these findings.
Here are a few examples:
7d ISO 12800 RAW | Processed with Photoshop ACR 5.6
