on the tripod folded size:
folded up it is approx 1.5\" to 2\" longer then a 35xx/55xx gitzo. diameter or the folded bulk though is substantially more compact even with leg pads. the way the spider and leg attachments are designed reduce the footprint of the whole tripod. the whole package with a BH55 or just about any other equilevent head still fits in a Kinesis XS tripod bag
on spikes:
i think here gitzo my have the edge for now. though still in developement the RRS stomp in spikes are a remove after use type product. where gitzos long spikes also are they lack the stomp in flange. they do have the set of smaller spikes which can remain on the tripod and be covered by the rubber tripod ends. that is nice to have. also by having the small spikes as a semi permanent part of your gitzo it raises the total available height by almost an inch
