Note how, more often than not, the \"noise grain\" is vertically oriented.

The 7D seems to have a problem with banding, that will affect raw converters that don\'t compensate for it. The banding is not only present in deep shadows, it may in fact be mismatched gains of the various readout channels, and so would affect all tonal ranges.
