I don\'t have all the info nicely collated yet, and am swamped with work this week, so I\'ll have to just lay it all out without too much clean up.
Here\'s the basic idea, assuming you have lenses that are uber-sensitive to flare:
Rectangular hoods are better than round ones, and there are some formulas out there for figuring the dimensions. I think I got that info from some Zeiss-lovers site. (Note that petal hoods are even better, but impossible to configure unless you find a template for your lens online - which is possible for only some lenses.)
Another factor, for me, is that absolute hood depth must vary with aperture and/or zoom focal length. So, I figure a rectangular hood has the advantage (over a petal hood) in that you can add a \"slider\" outer hood, for adjusting depth.
OK, all tis is mute if you feel like carrying a small, clip-able sunscreen, but that\'s not always convenient & besides, for me this is a hobby, so it would be fun to experiment.
Caveat: Some of this is not my own writing, but I don\'t remember where I pulled it from. (and I probably changed it a bit)
Final caveat: I have yet to actually try this, just can\'t find the time. Also, I had to interpolate some of the dimensional data, so my numbers COULD be off (but I doubt it) OK, so now for the unedited, un-collated info, straight from y database:
