I suppose the rod is thin because it is meant to go through the umbrella shaft holder on the AB head. But, I think what the dude was trying to say is that he doesn\'t think the head will support the PLM, so he decided to use a heavier duty umbrella fitting.
Maybe PCB can succeed where others have failed with this approach, but from first glance maybe they should have called this a POS instead of PLM.
