Re: #320 Night Dive | |
Mike, this cat, Ciara, is the one I used under the umbrella a few weeks ago. She actually is diving, but not into water. I found that she absolutely loves laser pointers, and will chase them almost anywhere. So, I set up a 10 foot ladder in my studio, and made a perpendicular blank about 8 feet up. Set the whole thing next to my light/product shoot table....then shined the laser light on the table...Ciara did the rest by willingly jumping down from the plank (oh, she loves heights too) onto the table to get the laser light. I was really impressed with her form. I believe she is a bombay breed, but she somehow is a mini version...only about 5 pounds at 15 months old. However, she is pure muscle, and none of the two larger cats in my house underestimate her ferocious nature.
As to your question - it is a bit of both. I had the basic comp in mind, but was initially heading toward a stroboscopic shot. When I saw her fearless form, and how graceful she was in her leaps (she did it about 8-10 times) I changed it to
a single shot, rather than multiple flashes in a single image. Background was 53 inch gray paper. So, I adjusted mid shoot, and after the shoot - but the basic idea is still present. (hope that makes sense)

Very cool James! If he/she is anything like my cat Jinx (which is a spitting image), my guess is that he/she was lying down all stretched out at the time. Cause you and I both know that no cat is this crazy
Question? Did you have this comp in mind when you light the kitty or did it progress into this after the shot? Just curious. It came out great and works well as a complete piece. I like it! but I am going to have to take of a couple points for the slight Photoshop
