ArtIsRight has a set of four YouTube videos that he recorded 3 months ago. They cover Apple Studio, XDR, and MacPro displays/computers. Note that he has older videos this that don't cover the hardware calibration, so ignore those. The first video is called: "Part 1: Apple Pro Displays: How to create a custom color preset." The third video covers the Full calibration, which uses Apple's built-in Pro Display Calibrator, so you may want to watch that one first. I believe the second video goes over the fine tune calibration for white balance and luminance plus the full calibration using the Calibrate software instead of Apple's hardware calibration. You can skip over the full calibration since that is now replaced with Apple's full calibration.
Basically, you run the full calibration using Apple's calibration followed by a fine-tune calibration. The full calibration restores the Studio Display to its factory default and the fine-tune calibration fine tunes the white balance and luminance. You can run periodic Fine-tune calibrations in between full calibrations if you wish. I used the Calibrate software in the past. After a few years, my luminance value dropped from 120 to 117 when I did the fine-tune calibration, and you can't increase the luminance when you select an Apple Preset. After I ran the full calibration, the monitor would report 120 during the fine calibration process, as it did when the monitor was new. Note that I personally use a luminance of 120, but you likely know what you're doing in this area, so you would use the best value for your situation. Also, you'll likely need to create a new color preset with your desired luminance value, which is covered in the videos and is something that you likely already done if you've calibrated your monitor prior.
There are a couple of things to note:
- Apple's full calibration does not replace the icc profile for the monitor, so if you have a icc profile from a prior calibration, it will still be assigned. Therefore, before you start a calibration using this new method, you need to set the monitor, via the ColorSync Utility, back to the factory default. Just click on the Current Profile dropdown and select "Set to Factory." I believe the factory default only has some general meta data in it, no color mapping.
- During the Fine-tune calibration inside of the Calibrate software, there is a step where you need to change the technology type for the Apple display, which defaults to White LED. In the Part 3 video, he calibrates a Studio Display XDR, so he changes White LED to MiniLED since that is a mini LED display. From a previous video, he used GB-LED for the regular Apple Studio Display. I did a little bit of research, and people seemed to think that setting it to White LED or GD-LED for a regular Apple Studio Display limited their color gamut to sRGB. They changed it to miniLED even though the regular Studio Display is not mini LED, and they got a color gamut closer to P3, which matched the capability of the display. This is what I did, and the results look good to me.
After you finish the calibration, all of the color mapping is done within the display, so you can move it between computers without any need to re-calibration. You just need to select your desired color preset.
