In the Smooth setting pointed up in a vertical orientation at 400mm, it will not creep from 400mm to 100mm. With the lens at 100mm it will creep to 400mm.
Point the lens down and the behavior is opposite, it will creep from 400mm to 100mm. Not inconsistent behavior, but the orientation of the lens governs the direction of the creep.
