While I was in the East Pond Blind at Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge on a foggy morning here in New York City, a female bufflehead flew near at a diagonal crossing my view. Then she flared to land aborted the landing and flew directly at me with a landing just shy of filling my frame. A few moments later I found out why she turned as the male came into view and then diving to the bottom to eat. His photos are from two dives.
