My wife and I were staying a night at the Viking Cafe lodging, which comes with a pass to open the gate so you can drive out to the views. After unloading our stuff Debbie took a nap while I went out to scout a hopeful sunrise shoot. I hiked around the mounds, without finding a compelling composition, but hoped things would look better at sunrise. I set the alarm the next morning and was psyched to see some broken clouds out the window, so gulped some coffee and got in the car. I was very unhappy when my pass wouldn't open the gate and the cafe was closed so I couldn't talk to anyone. I found out later that the passes only work once and I could have asked for two.
As the sunrise was starting to get good out over the ocean (not much action over the peaks) I started speed walking down the road. Well before getting to the mounds I looked to my left and saw a pond with calm water (protected from the wind by the berm the road is built on). I'm sure that I would have just driven by if I'd had a pass. Giving up on the mounds (derivative anyway) I got down and shot until the show was over.
