A bit of history. I am a professional NFL photographer and have been using Sony gear for the past 4 seasons. I use 3 Sony A1's my three lens are the 24-105 f4, the 70-200 2.8 and the 400 2.8. All great gear. From what you talented folks have been posting I bought a 150- 400 4.5 and an OM1 mark 2 as a birding/wildlife lens. I love it and tried it this past weekend for 1 half and left my 400 2.8 in the photo room. I used the small focus area. S-IS, silent sequential set to 20 frames. What I am seeing is the focus point is jumping from the player I want to shoot and will jump off to fans, or other players. I use the same focus point on my Sony and also set a back button to LOCK the focus. Can I do this w OM? Can I assign another button instead of the AEL button to lock an image? Appreciate the help. Considering the 50-200 2.8 as a complement to the 150-400 4.5. so full frame equivalent. 100-400 2.8 and 300-800 4.5.

Thanks

the OM-1II does have an actual ‘lock’ function which only works with Ai subject detection active as far as I know.
the actual ‘lock’ button is the same button you’d hold down to scroll through multiple recognized/boxed Ai subjects in the frame.
press and hold that button (whatever you programmed it to) scroll through all the boxes until you reach your desired subject/box then release. then press the button again to lock.
That’s likely the slowest way to lock a subject if you were using the largest AF target or ALL AF Points with multiple boxes in the frame.
typically, when using ALL AF Targets and when numerous subjects are recognized/boxed, the camera Ai will default AF to the Ai box/subject closest to center frame or closest to camera.
so you could quickly place your desired subject at center of frame (you should see the box turn white from gray indicating it’s the active box/subject) then hit the lock button then recompose.
Depending on how many boxes are in the frame that may be a little quicker.
I think the AF target is slaved to the Ai box by default on the OM-1II which is good.
* With numerous targets in the frame, I think the fastest way to operate with lock is
using a smaller AF target box. touch AF target to any part of any Ai box then press the ‘lock’ button…et voila…locked.
the AF Target is now un-caged to that Ai box. you can now recompose all you like and focus whenever you like.
You can ready the un-caged AF Target box on another Ai box in the frame and lock subject whenever you please. hit the button twice (once to release the current lock and once to activate it again on the new box) as fast as you can. Super fast and easy.
There is a +Tr (tracking) option but I was told by Olympus tech that +Tr was always intended for z-axis subjects with no camera movement/panning at all(think camera held steady with a duck swimming towards the camera).
+Tr is based off size, shape, and color of an object. I'd bet the camera, +Tr, would have fits trying to isolate and differentiate differences in size, colors and shapes of a football team (or a herd of zebras).
There is a C-AF sensitivity setting (5 increments, +2 most reactive, -2 least reactive more sticky) that adjusts how responsive/reactive continuous AF is but I’m not sure if subject Ai simply overrides those settings or not.
