I've used/owned the 300 f2.8 VR (i) and 200-400mm f4 VR (i)... the zoom is same construction as G-series super teles... These were my primary optics when using a D500 and D850. Later on, I added the 500PF.
I slowly made the transition to the Z system shooting the Z6/Z7 and then versions II along with the DSLRs. I used FTZ 1 and FTZ 2 adapters. I jumped to the Z9 around May 2022 and used my G telephotos until I could make a full transition to the Z-series. I found that the AF speed of the Z9 w/ my 200-400 and 500PF was at least as fast as it was with the D500 and D850. Not only was it as fast, but I found it to be more accurate... the latter was really surprising. I had to sell the 300 f2.8 to buy the Z9, so I can't add more than what I have.
