I never noticed that the RF 400mm and the RF 800 had different diameters. I know the same short hood and pinch cap fits both the 400 and 800 without issues.
I love both the RF 400 and 100-300mm. They work so good with the 2x. Versatility hands down go with the 100-300 if you are good with 600mm range. This is an awesome travel lens getting you 100mm to 600mm in one lens. If you need 800mm then the 400mm is a great 400, 560, 800 lens.
Neither one will disappoint. I just took both to Florida and both lenses fit with my R1's attached in the Gura Gear bag. The 100-300 with the 2x and R1 attached fits also on one side.
