The Exposure comp dial on the XT is useless. Turn it into a psam and the XT’s biggest problem is solved. Adjusing aperture and exposure comp with command wheels is more natural and faster than using a dial and lens ring.

Wow, Jack. The EC dial is “useless!?”

I totally disagree. I

rely on it all the time, and it is quick and intuitive to use, even when my eye is to the viewfinder. Using it is actually pretty fundamental to how I shoot street.

I use one (non-Fujifilm) system with PASM and I use the XT5 without it. Compensating for exposure issues with the EC knob is really fast and straightforward.

I usually shoot street in aperture priority mode — as long as the shutter speed is OK, to my way of thinking the aperture is a more critical decision. So I select the aperture I want and then keep an eye on shutter speed to ensure that I don’t go to low, and I’ll make a quick ISO adjustment if necessary.

However, in a lot of cases “stuff happens” in the scene that the AE system doesn’t quite catch. (This isn’t just a Fujifilm thing — it is the nature of AE systems.) For example, There might be very bright sky in a scene that includes shadows. Or the whole scene might have extremely low contrast. In the first case I probably want to decrease the exposure to protect the highlights, planning to bring the shadows back in post. (Anyone who knows about the zone system is familiar with this line of thought.) Or I may want to slighlty increase the exposure in that extremely low contrast scene to center the histogram a bit more to the right.

I do these things on the fly with the EC knob. It is quick and intuitive. Because the knob is dedicated to this one function, there’s never any confusion about what it does and and I don’t need ot make an preliminary mode selections to tell a knob to be EC and not ISO or something else.

I understand how to do EC with a modal PASM interface, and I appreciate that you might love that and feel that the dedicated control isn’t what YOU want… but to say it is worthless is a bit over the top! ;-)
