D3200 + 18-55 might be a really nice camera to keep handy in the car, some of the used places have a warranty, if that is the concern. The D3200 does well on Bill Claff's DR testing, and presumably has Nikon look and colors, so I dont see the latest most expensive 24-26 mp aps beating it by much, in terms of iq.
It meters but no af on AF-D, not sure if you'd have focus confirmation. D7200 and D500 look nice, D750 really cheap imo, of course youd have to buy used most likely unless you can find NOS.
