It is worth pointing out that an 8x enlargement is not a large magnification. For 35mm it’s roughly an 8x10. So it is quite possible that your pictures are just not critically sharp, so a high resolution scan is indeed just showing failures in precise focus, shutter shock, camera shake or even lens performance. I would say this is quite common, many slides may also look impressive when projected, but when scanned it reveals lack of critical sharpness.
