The problem that we have is that we are presented with so many good options, so knowing what your goals are is pretty central to what lenses you should pick. I no longer shoot for money, nor shoot sports/birds/wild animals, so my needs are few. I mainly wanted a small camera for traveling light, as a color camera when I’m mainly shooting B&W, or when traveling in less than safe environments.

I purchased the A7Cr & Sony 40mm G lens as a means to delete the Leica Q3 43 from preorder. So, what I wanted was a small, high resolution package. Also, having previously owned many Sony bodies up to the A7Rv, I discovered that I rarely used my GM glass, except for the 24 & 85mm and when they were used, they were rarely shot wide open. I viewed three weeks of GM 24mm vacation use in France and found that I rarely shot wider than f/4.0. I also didn’t use my zooms, even though I could make a great case for owning them. So, my purpose in looking for a zoom was for one and done carry for when I didn’t want to take a bag, but I still wanted “smaller than a GM”. The 20-70mm did that for me. I now have ‘small’ primes at 17,21,24,35,40 & 85mm where a three lens subset will make up my kit on a given outing. The 20-70mm will go with me to family & friend events. For all of my primes I went for slower lenses in order to keep the size and weight down. What has allowed for this is IBIS, superior noise reduction software and the occasional/rare use of AI bokeh. If this was my primary high quality system, I would have kept the A7Rv and GM lenses..probably upgraded the 16-35 & 85mm GM to GMii.

I just received the Sigma 17mm f/4.0, but in my short time testing the lens, it seems to be quite sharp centrally and sharp/adequate corner sharpness from wide open. Most importantly is that it is small, light and focuses quite close. It is a pretty good lens to carry with the 20-70mm, as is the Sigma 90mm f/2.8.
