Hoesch; Phonix-West;
it was once one of the largest steelworks in Europe and the largest employer in the region. It was profitable despite a steel crisis. The Hoesch site was huge. In the picture you can only see a small part of what was formerly Hoesch, which was called "Phoenix-West". After a hostile, capitalist takeover by Krupp, Hoesch was shut down, largely dismantled and sold to China. Many thousands of very well-paid workers were laid off. In the building on the left in the picture, only the wall is original as it is a listed building. There is now a restaurant with outdoor dining downstairs and offices for various companies upstairs.
