That's the advantage of being a child of the 60s, we still use classic Christmas lights, with candles made of wax and fire and flame.
But if Nikon adds a Z 35/1.2 S Plena this year, then I'll buy a whole bunch of electric fairy lights.
Should be close to MFD from the Plena, Vanessa atalanta / Admiral.
I took a whole bunch of pictures in our garden as the lilacs are in bloom and there are lots of Red Admirals active.
I think there should be some better shots to come out of this, I just took some of the first shots straight away to save time and developed them quickly in LRC with a few basic settings.
It was also very windy, so that the flowers were constantly wobbling back and forth and it takes a lot of concentration with the Z6 to get the focus halfway right with such an open aperture @ MFD of 0.82 m/2.69 ft with the constant wobbling of the flowers in the wind.
DoF wide open is ultra thin in the MFD area.
That's the beauty of super-thin DoF.
The lilac bush is right next to our house.
In the background on the first picture are actually quite close, bricks of the house wall, the lilac blossom in the background already dried up from the summer sun.
So it makes a nice contrasting splash of color, with more DoF the dried blossoms look just shabby.
A lens with a entrance pupil like the Plena at close range almost completely obliterates the confusion in the background and in the end it even looks harmonious, although the same picture with significantly more DOF would have been for the garbage can.
It's not always the last word in wisdom when DoF is really needed, but it makes it possible to take pictures under difficult circumstances in relation to the background/immediate surroundings, which are otherwise often the death knell for the image effect.
