I agree with the sentiment expressed by others that the Z7iii died the day the Z8 came out. It has always felt that the Z7 was a shortcut to get a MLIC "system" out the door with the fewest resources possible while keeping the maximum number of people the least unhappy possible. So take the same body, slap two different sensors in it, et voila. As far as I am aware Nikon has never before released a highly spec'd sensor in a PSAM form factor and a fragile accessory port. The market for such a camera is limited to people like me - aging enthusiasts who no longer want the extra weight and size of the "semi pro" body. I would have loved to see the Z6iii at an intermediate Mpx (low to mid 30s) to scratch my landscape itch without having to go to a large body, but alas that does not seem to be the case. 24MPx is plenty for 99% of my needs so I will live, albeit in agony
Nikon released the Z6/7 cameras first because that is the heart of the market. They thought that their user base would accept these deficient, uncompetitive cameras out of loyalty. They got the cameras, and the loyalty thing way wrong. So many people properly judged this mistake that Nikon's market share and financials deteriorated to an extensional level. Nikon has spent years trying to catch up technology wise. They have done well with one camera the Z9 which they have packaged in two bodies. I believe that Nikon understands the importance of both the Z6/7 III bodies to its long term success. They lack of these two segments in Nikon's line up has forced them to down price the Z9/8 cameras. Once they have this price point properly equipped in the line they will be free to up price version II of the Z9/8. Nikon's vison is not as the low priced leader, as they are currently positioned. They will want to tompete heads up in the market. They will make both cameras, and my expectation is that they will both be excellent, fully competitive cameras in their respective price points.
