Re: Lightweight travel setup options / opinions

Spent 2 months in each of the last 2 summers traveling in Thailand with my Thai wife of 21 years. She was their because of family, I was there for the photography Took my Olympus EM1.3 with 12-40 f2.8 zoom and 17 f1.2 and 45 f1.2 Olympus Pro primes (34 & 90mm FF equiv.) 2 years ago, then the Sony A7RIV with Tamron 20-40 and 50 f1.4GM and Batis 85 primes last year. So top notch lenses for each system and both setups were excellent, but Sony setup was just a bit too much weight/bulk for everyday carry, so when I got home I thought long and hard about what I would take next time.

I went with your Option 3, the Sony A6700 with the diminutive Sigma 18-50 f2.8 lens as the main zoom, plus added a Sony 15 f1.4 for wide angle and a Sigma 56 f1.4 for my longer portrait prime. All lenses are APS-C and overall a much smaller and lighter kit than before, even vs my M4/3 kit. The A6700 AF is better than either of the 2 other bodies, the newer “AI” AF is so accurate, I now just set the camera to a large zone and let it do the AF, it’s hit rate is about 98%! This last Saturday I took 198 portrait shots, using Human subject detection with Eye Detect activated, with the Sigma 56mm and all but 4 were dead-on accurate and I know on 2 of those I forgot to push the AF-On button to initiate BBF The IQ with these lenses on the new 26MP sensor really shines.

Far as cost this is the least expensive option, my total cost for the A6700 camera and a 3 lens setup @ $2,949 was less than a A7CR alone @$2,999 USD. And each lens takes the same 55mm filter, again saving some cost/weight over multiple filter thread sizes or larger filters sizes.
