Re: Sigma 500mm f/5.6 DG DN OS Sports Image Thread
Wildlife and kids sports are two of the applications for which a phone doesn’t work. 20-100mm is pretty well covered by a phone and pinching. I would think long lenses would absolutely sell cameras. I know the families with whom I share youth sports photos are amazed at what I can do with a long lens and a fast camera. Do most people who have kids in sports buy a rig? No. But even if 5% do then you have expanded a market. Sony is foolish to leave that end of the market to Nikon, and wildlife photogs in my experience spend.

I’m enjoying this thread. Looking forward to seeing others put it through its paces. I hope this lens is a success and can point Sony and Sigma towards more nimble, if a bit slower, field-based primes. Sony 500 5.6 would be a dream. Round it out with a 700 6.3 and I think Sony would be back on equal footing with Nikon.
Sony doesn't care about that, though. They aren't interested enough in wildlife photography as a separate market, at least not for their GM glass, and they probably think the 200-600 is enough for the consumer glass. They're in it to make money and with Nikon gobbling up most of the pro wildlife market and Canon grabbing the consumer end, there's not much incentive for Sony to spend a lot of money to horn in on what is basically a niche market. Our best hope is that Sony can negotiate a deal with Sigma that allows the bodies to use their full range of features with the third-party glass.
I wonder how niche wildlife photography is though? I know that this forum probably skews towards wildlife more than in the regular world, but I spend a lot of time in nature areas and feel like wildlife photography is getting more and more popular. I don't have any actual data to back this up though, so I could be exaggerating the size of the market.
