I didn't realize this. There were lots of good third party options for EF mount. Why are they not doing this for the RF mount?

To my knowledge, all third party options for EF were unlicensed designs using reverse engineered protocols. This is why many lenses had AF issues or required firmware updates for newer cameras. This probably wasn't anticipated when the EF mount was designed. This is obviously bad for Canon as they make no money from unlicensed knock-offs and lost lens sales. Canon presumably decided to better protect is intellectual property this time.

I suspect Canon will eventually license the RF mount though. It has already begun doing so in a limited way with Cosina in fact. I think they wanted to have a few years of exclusivity to fill out their lens line first.

Unlike Sony, which open sourced part of its lens protocols to attract support when they were a distant afterthought in the market, Canon has not yet been required to do so. But the pressure is on and eventually I think they will open things up, as Nikon has recently done.

We will see.
