This café is on the Rue des Petits Carreaux, a short street that runs south from Rue Réamur and changes name to Rue Montorgueil. It ran through Les Halles, which was the huge central fresh food market of Paris until 1973, when it moved to a suburb. Hence the painting of the pig and butcher. The right wall had a ceramic tile painting of the Rue des Petits Carreaux showing a scene from around 1905. I took this picture in 2017 but five years later found both paintings were gone, replaced with nondescript art nouveau decorations. The charm of this café is gone.
The other thing that changed is that the bar had stools and there were copies of the morning papers, mounted on sticks that one could read. I used the have a coffee and a croissant breakfast there and read Le Monde and Libération. Now, no more stools and no newspapers. In Parisian cafés drink at the bar are cheaper than at the tables. That’s one reason that many (not wholly authentic) sushi restaurants in Paris don’t have a sushi bar — because people don’t want to “look cheap” having sushi at the bar.
I shot this picture with the Summilux 35 ASPH-FLE, which is great for this type of light. What I don’t like about this lens is the bokeh balls it produces when there is backlight, or background with bright highlights: for example light coming through leaves, as in portrait. Anyone else has this problem with this lens?
