because nikon in particular dropped the ball, for example they released the z9 without the industry-standard hi-frequency led flicker reduction that other camera bodies already had.
that's pretty much a mandatory feature on modern sports cameras.

that is speculation, sony never stated that they were developing real-time tracking subject acquisition, and afaik it's still unequalled in the industry today.
