This is the big plus about the Sony system...all these fun lenses.
It is also a big minus. No matter what lens you buy, you will always be looking at something newer and shinier down the line. The Sony system is not good for people like me with GAS issues.
Lolol… truth! Same here. Given my excellent experience with the Sammy 135 I would have waited for this lens but just acquired the Tammy which is really an excellent lens.
It really gets the best of us. I actually miss when there weren't this many options.
Now, I got 4 GM primes; 14 GM, 24 GM, 50 f/1.2 GM and 135 GM, 3 zooms; 16-35 G, 50-400 and 200-600 G, and 7 MF lenses; Laowa 9 f/5.6, Laowa 25, Laowa 85, Loxia 21, CV 50 APO and Elmar 135. I probably prefer a 35 and 85 kit.
Who knew I ever "needed" all these? And of this kit is like my tenth of so, after puzzling with several kits. Somehow, I justified spending this much, and I barely return any of the expenses (just do a few tasks for acquaintances, at times). But then again, it's passion to its purest, and they are both tools and paint brushes, and I would probably just "waste" the expenses on something else, which doesn't inspire me as much; perhaps an apartment, ha!
I don't even do astro, as the conditions are horrible here, and I rarely do portraits. Still, I appreciate the quality, and it's impressive what lenses can pack in such form factors these days. The 9, 14 and 50-400 probably impressed me the most, just for the sheer engineering. I just had to acquire them.
I do at times consider just settling down with 4 zooms at times; 12-24 GM, 24-70 GM II, 70-200 GM II and 200-600 G, and get rid of 10 lenses. Of course, we got 2 of those 35-150 easter eggs now. At least these are easy to avoid for me, as I prefer the speed, interval focus and ability to use teleconverters, of the 70-200, which also could replace the 50-400. Certain Olympus cameras, with their phenomenal stacking functions, make it tremendously easier when doing high magnification macro, caught my attention as well, especially with their recent 90 2x.
The thing is, that all of this will cost at least as much, and although it's as practical as it gets, it really isn't; as I still would only carry 1 lens less, and the switching will never end, as I go from ultra-wide to super-tele, from one moment to another, and factors as aperture, ergonomics (the MF lenses are fun at times), sunstars, durability over time, form factor, et cetera.
Then, there's the many cute Samyang f/1.8 and Sigma 'I' lenses. Too many options!
Excuse me for rambling.
