If your best friend has photos taken on (or of) the New Jersey during his deployment, you might suggest that he sends a copy of them to the Battleship New Jersey museum. Anything showing the ship during that time will show them how the ship was then as opposed to how the ship was when it was turned over to them.
If your friend hasn't discovered it yet.....
The Battleship New Jersey museum frequently uploads videos on You Tube showing various compartments/areas of the ship, discussing the ships history, the ongoing restoration work being done by the volunteers, etc. Currently the curator is visiting other warships with a group of people associated with warship museums. His last (other ship) videos have been on the BattleshipTexas, and the Battleship Missouri either showing restoration work, or showing compartments in the Missouri that have been "restored" but either haaven't yet been restored on the New Jersey, or didn't exist on the New Jersey.
