In the Philippines this is the after sales support situation that I am aware of
- Canon: closest service center to me was 20km near an expressway's exit. That closed a few months prior to COVID. Odds are revenue could not cover opex. Now I have to go an extra 10+km into the city to have service done
- Nikon: previous distributor shut down because grey market imports killed them and their overhead wasn't covered by their sales. Current distributor shut down their service center in the ground floor of our flat that we own
- Sony: During a Sony event's Q&A a Sony E mount professional photographer complained to the Japanese boss about how bad the service level of Sony service centers specific for E mount cameras
- Samsung: I won a raffle prize of a Samsung mirrorless NX kit but I wasn't present to claim it. They gave it to a friend instead which I wasn't bothered with because that system's dead
If given a choice of 3rd party lens companies declaring bankruptcy or Canon I choose 3rd party companies.
I appreciate 3rd party lens companies are
- cheaper
- more innovative
- higher risk takers
- providing inspiration for Canon/Sony/Nikon's future lenses
But I'd want them to do RF mount lenses nearing year 2030 when Canon at least recoup their R&D cost.
