Re: Voigtlander 28mm f/2 Ultron II Review

Just starting to use this lens on the SL2-S. Quirky and fun little lens. I didn't expect it to be so traffic cone shaped, especially with a protective filter on there. I ordered the LH-4N hood for it. I prefer this round retro-style hood that takes up less space over the one that's supposed to be used with it, which I think would make the lens look like a tornado siren.

Lens is built like a tank. Very solid feeling, and focus smoothness is better than the Leica tab lenses I've used. This lens focuses more like the 50 Lux BC, which is high praise. The focus tab is really easy to use, and I can change back and forth between this lens and the 35 Lux Pre-ASPH v2 easily. That lens just got a CLA from DAG, and the focusing experience between them is identical. The wider design of the focusing tab on the CV is more comfortable and easier to use for me than Leica's thinner focusing tabs, though. Aperture ring feel is good, similar to other small CV offerings.

Crazy sharp. Vignette profile at f/2 is nice, and it's easy to remove with only the Generic profile in C1 and ~35% strength on the slider – seems less strong than the CV APOs at f/2 and infinity IIRC.

I'll have to use it more before commenting on infinity landscape. Certainly there is nothing at this price point that performs anywhere close to this lens at any distance.

Not sure what's holding me back from being more enthusiastic about this lens, though. I think it's the weird shape of the lens to be completely honest. I'm thinking I'll start to come around once the hood arrives. I wish CV would make black paint versions of all the hoods that fit the black paint lenses.
