Without exception I carry on all camera gear with the exception of my tripod, a small shoulder bag (that gets stuffed with socks, etc) and non-essential camera gear (e.g. sensor kit, body brush, etc.)
I also make sure I have any critical computer gear and cables with me.
Do make sure that your smallest aircraft can accept your bag.
