Your recommendation of compact FUJIFILM zoom to build lens family seems like a safe bet. However in practice zooms tends to be used at either end most of the time; something to be aware of?

Given this conundrum originally went for (2) prime lens; Fuji 16mm and Fuji 50mm. Recently traded-in my 50mm due to so-so results. Immediately it became obvious Fuji 16-55mm opened new doors; colours with character. Not missing my former 50mm prime lens. Fuji 16-55mm forces you to take better photographs. That is if you want the very best.

NB: RICOH GRIIIx recommended for my daughter. Most people prefer Fujifilm X100F with viewfinder. Price about the same..
