I don't think it was in the Smokey Mts, but I'm just a Northerner, this was NE of Mars Hill in a town called Burnsville on Possom Trot road.
The display seem asynchronous, but numerous and it was only by chance that I saw the display.
Processing was complicated by the cloudy light polluted sky.
The best I've seen was driving along coastal Maine where field after field lit up and they silhouetted trees between the glowing open areas.
