Yesterday, I left my house at 3:30 to go to Jones Beach in Long Island, NY to see an airshow. The Friday rehearsal was no go due to weather condition, much of the show on Saturday was also called off due to thunderstorm, so the beach was packed on Sunday. I thought I had the best front row seat because I was there so early, but the late arrivals just set up their chairs and umbrellas in front of me.
I had never been to airshow at this location before, 500 miles round trip, $200 gas and tolls, but it was well worth it. I had never heard of the Navy F-35C Lightening II Demonstration Team until a month ago. Their don't even have a website (I searched, but couldn't find any).
I was pleasantly (very) surprised their sent two ships up for the show and even did an opposing pass! Which was totally unexpected. Too bad my opposing pass shot (the last picture) of the two F-35Cs was less than sharp. I don't know when I will get to see this phenomenal team perform again, so I am kicking myself for ruining the opposing pass shot. I used the 600mm+1.4 TC on one camera and the 200-600mm on another. A lot of the F-35C shots were at 840mm, with no cropping or very minimal cropping, unbelievable closeups. But focal length greed has its own downside, the first picture is a good example of that.
It was very hazy, and back-lit most of the time, very difficult condition to shoot. The F-22 and the Blue Angels performed too but I haven't had time to edit those.
