Ich hatt’ einen Kameraden,
Einen bessern findst du nit.
Die Trommel schlug zum Streite,
Er ging an meiner Seite
In gleichem Schritt und Tritt.
Eine Kugel kam geflogen,
Gilt’s mir oder gilt es dir?
Ihn hat es weggerissen,
Er liegt mir vor den Füßen,
Als wär’s ein Stück von mir.
Will mir die Hand noch reichen,
Derweil ich eben lad.
Kann dir die Hand nicht geben,
Bleib du im ew’gen Leben
Mein guter Kamerad!
I say this with greatest regret because I cry over him.
Two days ago my nephew died as a hero in a fight against Soviets in Ukraine, near the city of Irpen.
He was a descendant of a Polish noble family with great traditions, the roots of which date back to 1479, in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, when the King of Poland and Great Duke of Lithuania granted them the noble status for merits in the battles against the Moscovite/Russian invaders.
The fallen hero studied at the polytechnic and the academy of fine arts in our city, beautiful Wrocław/Poland. He was in his third year of studies.
When he heard about the war and understood what kind of war it was, he quit his studies and joined the Ukrainian army as a foreign volounteer, like his ancestors, members of our family, 500 years ago, when Rzeczpospolita was in need and Ukraine was a part of it.
He was a gifted painter. He painted many beautiful portraits in acrylic, including a portrait of my wife with her favorite cat. Beautiful. Adored by everyone. An artistic work that will survive all of us.
He was also a writer. He managed to write and publish only one book only, before he died. He was an absolutely unique young man.Extremly gifted, like some of our family members ,repeatedly over centuries. I can't believe that he is no longer alive. That I will never see him again. That I will never hear his cheerful, kind voice and embrace him,as usuall. And that I will never hear him singing in my choir again....
My soul cries irreversibly!!!
All the many heroic warriors in our family of the last 500 years will welcome him in heaven with joy, because he fought like a hero and did not taint our honor!
Hail to you for ages Ziemowit, our young flawless knight !!!
Hail to you, brave warrior like all of our predecessors from the last 500 years!!!
You have not dishonored the fame of our family!
