Hells Canyon is a ten-mile-wide canyon in the western United States. The Snake River forms the border between Oregon and Idaho and Southern Washington and Idaho. The canyon was carved by the waters of the Snake River, which flows more than one mile below the canyon's west rim on the Oregon side and 7,400 feet below the peaks of Idaho's Seven Devils Mountains range to the east. This area includes 214,000 acres of wilderness. Most of the area is inaccessible by road.
These images were taken at Hat Point Fire Lookout on the Oregon side of Hell's Canyon. Hat Point is located directly across from the Seven Devil's mountain peaks and Heaven's Gate Fire Lookout on the Idaho side of the canyon. With binoculars one can see Heaven's Gate F.L. from Hat Point. This location on the rim is the only place that the Snake River can be seen from the rim. The forest road to Hat Point is only accessible by car or pickup from June through early October or the first snow. Four wheel drive is recommended, though not required.
