Beautiful shots, Lance.
Lately, especially while I used Z9 wiht 50/1.2 and other lenses for street and cityscape, looking at the raw file, I really think that the files looked quite different from Z7 ii, in favor of Z9 but I can't quite put my fingers on what it is exactly. Looking at first few shots from 50/1.2s really made me think that the rendering is not quite what I usually get from Z7 ii with 50/1.2s even. May be it is just new toy syndrome or honeymoon period, perhaps. Just wonder if anyone else notice anything like this or am I just imagining things.
Of course may be it is just that Nikon revamp image engine in Expeed7 or may be there is something about the sensor, I don't really know.
PS I am not talking about resolution, noise, dynamic range, but I felt that when I went from D7100 to D810, overall tonality and rendering were quite similar. There was a big change in D500/D850 from D810. Z7/Z7ii aren't much different from D850 but now with Z9, look like there is another change here.
Despite what is often claimed: that when shooting raw, any camera can be made to look the same, also in their raw output camera sensors can look inherently different. I experienced that going from the Sony A7RII to the A7RIV, and I can also see it in the few raw samples of the Z9 that I downloaded vs. the Z7 (I had the original Z7).
In fact, I did not really like the raw files from the Z7+500PF. That is subjective perhaps, but the raw files of the Z9 have made me think again. The only way to shoot a Z9 for me is with the 500 and coming 800pf lenses, because otherwise the weight of the Z9 is a showstopper.
Now someone only has to tell me which would be the better option:
Nikon Z9 + 500PF + 800PF, or,
Sony A7RIVA + 600GM
I would think A1 would be a much better competing choice to Z9 than A7r IVa. I do have A7r IV and its AF is nowhere near the capability of Z9. Its laggy EVF is also no contest and its high iso won't be hearly as good. for action/wildlife, I don't think the extra 15 mp is worth the drop in AF/EVF performance. In a grand scheme of things, A7r IV is much closer to Z7 ii than to Z9, I think. One rumor I heard is that Z8 will be a high MP body but with stacked sensor. It won't be as fast as Z9 but if true and if you don't need 20+ FPS, it could be a nice compromise as it should still offer excellent AF coupled with blackout free EVF. However, it is only rumor so far so we will have to wait and see.
I am eagerly waiting to hear about the weight of the new 400/2.8s. I think if you use 3kg lens, Z9 make a lot of sense as it will be more comfortable to use with bigger grip. Of course you can add grip to A1 but by that time, weight won't be much of an issue. It is more of a problem when you attach say 50/1.8s, 35/1.8s etc then weight of Z9 can be a bit more annoying
With 50/1.2s, Noct 58/.95, yes, they weight a ton but much better balance and easier on the hand than using these lenses with Z7 ii.

I don't doubt the rendering is different, and that's exciting to me, but it's not the picture styles settings between your cameras, is it? If you use a RAW processor that leverages Nikon's JPEG settings, that is, of course.
I shoot JPEG sometimes, and Nikon's sharpening settings in particular can make some pretty nice JPEGs when you dial it in.
I shoot RAW only I have the camera sent 2mp jpg from raw file sometimes to my phone automatically for some social media use. For that purpose, Z9 is excellent and does not require much post processing at all except for bright background type situation.
