I have to say that even with the recent 35mm M-mount releases, the Voigtlander 35mm f/1.7 Ultron is still my top choice for the Leica M body and it's too bad it was discontinued. I highly recommend it if you can find one new or used. It's compact, well-built , superb optically and has great rendering.

On the Leica or Sony Kolari UT, it's capable of high resolution and contrast from f/1.7 across the entire image field. It's just as good, if not better, than our best 35mm M lenses like the Zeiss 35/1.4 ZM and Voigtlander 35/2 APO. It's also flat field, except when using it on a stock Sony or any other mirrorless other than the SL system which does much better but still not optimal for this lens.

The newer Voigtlander 35/2 APO only beats it at the extreme corner at wide apertures. Starting at f/4, I would not hesitate using the Ultron for serious landscapes. Regarding CA, there may be fringing in high contrast transitions but it's nothing to worry about and normal for a non-APO lens.

Focus transition zone is smooth making rendering very pleasant. I don't take this for granted for 35mm lens and it's another major strength compared to lenses like the Voigtlander 35/2 APO, Voigtlander 35/2 Ultron, Leica 35/1.4 FLE and even Zeiss 35/1.4 ZM. Many love the Leica and Zeiss' rendering but I find it quite harsh at transition zone for both lenses.

Flare resistance is the best I've seen in a 35mm lens and if you like defined sunstars, there is nothing better out there. There is prominent optical vignetting which translates to DOF deepening towards the edges as well as cat-eye shape specular highlights but very few lenses do any better. The Leica is one of them.

The Voigtlander 35/1.7 Ultron combines many strengths in one lens offering superb image quality, pleasant rendering and compactness. Many regrets it not being equipped with a focus tab while others don't like tabs...It's a wash.

Yes, all that and it is a reasonably small size that doesn't block the frame lines very much. I am very happy with mine and feel quite lucky to get one of the last ones that Cameraquest sold.
