You can click on the number of bids and the various bidders who bid - in fact the starting price was $5,000.
To say that someone wouldn't pay that isn't true--there's always someone who is desperate enough to do something like that and the bid history on this listing proves that.
But the salient issue is Easyshot wasn't lying.

Stop the fake news. I see two listed and one has a buy it now for $12,600. Nothing was sold. You can offer him $15,000 and see if you can finally get one and stop the FUD.
And it’s not Nikon fault that if somebody is desperate enough to pay that much.
It could just be the same guy with a different eBay account trying to hype up the price.
I don’t see why anyone would pay that. It’s not like a GPU where it’s being used for crypto mining.
