My third worst ride in an aircraft was in a C-130 A model one March. Flying from Ellington Field (Houston) to Nellis AFB to support our F-16s during Red Flag. Somewhere over north central Texas (Abilene) we had a bird strike through the pilots windscreen. Pilot received cuts from the impact, but he was OK. We couldn't fly pressurized so we had to detour south to El Paso and take the southern, low altitude route to Nellis. We were in that can for over six hours. The heater in the cargo area only heats the front 12-16 feet, and we were dressed for spring. We had all of our support equipment on pallets in the cargo bay so we only had the side canvas seats to sit on. I found our luggage pallet to be more comfortable. I guess I was spoiled flying in C-141As and F-4s.

...but thankful I didn't have to spend 6 hours or more in one of these in WWII...

I LOVE these olde monsters Ray!!! I have nothing but fond memories being airborne! Now repelling out of a helo? Or extraction on a McGuire rig??..My "six" still has scars! !!! Lots of stories, good and bad but enjoyable nonetheless!!!
Thanks!
