Time to provide an update on the Delkin card performance I ran tests this morning. I have discussed the tests and the results with tiggy, who was very helpful in both suggestions and insight.
Overall the results were very good but two things were noteworthy:
1: sustained write speed was not close to the 1GB/s mentioned in the thessdreview.com review.
2: RAW write performance was consistent but CRAW was not.
Set-up:
- Canon R5 on tripod, with Canon 100-400 v2 mounted to control ring. Lens kept at 100mm.
- Two cards tested; both Delkin 128GB CFexpress cards purchased from BH (confirmed by BH to be the new firmware)
- Before each test, the card had a low level format performed
- Camera: manual mode, 1/200, f/4.5, ISO 5000 (light was crappy), FF, spot/servo, evaluative metering, electronic shutter. Auto focused then locked to MF before test.
- shutter release cable used
- Testing timed with iPhone Timer
Test results:
Card 'A':
RAW - Test 1: 311 photos @ 57.9MB. 17.58GB/30s, 600.2MB/sec.
RAW - Test 2: 315 @ 57.9MB. 17.81GB/30s, 608.0MB/sec.
CRAW - Test 1: 556 @ 33.4MB. 18.14GB/30s, 618.9MB/sec
CRAW - Test 2: 551 @ 33.4MB. 17.97GB/30s, 613.4MB/sec.
Card 'B':
RAW - Test 1: 310 @ 58.9MB. 17.83GB/30s, 608.6MB/sec.
RAW - Test 2: 308 @ 58.9MB. 17.72GB/30s, 604.7MB/sec.
CRAW - Test 1: 342 @ 34.0MB. 11.36GB/30s, 387.6MB/sec.
CRAW - Test 2: 343 @ 34.0MB. 11.39GB/30s, 388.7MB/sec.
Because the Card 'B' CRAW numbers seemed so out of wack, I ran that test a third time.
CRAW - Test 3: 335 @ 33.1MB. 10.83GB/30s, 369.6MB/sec
As you can see, card 'A', RAW and CRAW, as well as card 'B' RAW are all nestled in around 600-620MB/sec. But the CRAW on card 'B' came in at 370-390MB/sec across the three tests.
Tiggy asked about the battery charge level and also suggested using 1/1000 SS. The battery was at 58% after the last test. I switched to a fully charged battery (both batteries are OEM) and reran CRAW tests. This is where it gets even more perplexing.
I ran two more tests; one with the original 1/200 SS and one with 1/1000 SS. A low level format was done before each test. The available light was much better at this time so it was easy to get these shutter speeds.
Card 'B':
Test 4: 1/200 SS, 342 photos @ 25.0MB. 8.35GB/30s, 285.0MB/sec.
Test 5: 1/1000 SS, 345 @ 32.9MB. 11.08GB/30s, 378.4MB/sec.
What I find interesting from this additional test is that the number of files handled in 30 seconds of CRAW stayed pretty consistent, even though the throughput changed noticeably based on the file size. The ISO going up increased the file size which increased the throughput as the number of files stayed relatively constant.
Battery capacity was at 95% when I finished Test 5.
I then reran the tests with the 'good' card (card 'A') and am really perplexed now. I was thinking I muckered something up with this card and CRAW in the first round of tests, but based on Tiggy’s comments (see below), that may not be the case. Here are the results of the Card 'A' CRAW retest.
Battery at 95%

While doing the above tests, I noticed periods (2 - 3, maybe 4, seconds) where no photos were being taken. I was surprised by that. I will mention that there was very little difference in the temperature of the camera from start to finish of these tests. I didn’t think to immediately take the card out to check temperature but within a minute or so of the end of shooting on one card, I can say the card wasn’t hot.
To complete ‘the picture’, here are key comments from Tiggy:
“I think that the higher throughput rate is achievable by both cards, but that there is some setting or circumstance that has changed. This was completely typical in my tests, and I spent days getting to the point where I could get consistent results.”
“The period of a few seconds of silence is typical of some cards, including the Delkin.”
“There is a LOT of firmware interactions between different hardware components of the card, the card slot in the camera, the other hardware in the camera, heat throttling in the camera and in the card, etc. It's too many variables - at least for me - to have a good sense of what would happen in any given instance. So, a lot of trial and error before I got consistent results for good comparisons.”
I don’t know what conclusions to draw from this except that the Delkin cards deliver anywhere from really good to exceptional performance and don’t get hot. While not as performant as I thought they would be based on the thessdreview.com review, they are still very good at a good price.
