actually you are correct. they come up with the formula using the tools at hand from the actually manufacturer (sony semiconductor) and their engineers with their "imagineering" and you the sensor that has a sony semiconducter name on its back and nikons IP in it.
they are not going to build a foundry for the sort of output they need. they do make the the litho systems for said manufacturing. gee, i wonder who sony gets their litho equipment from? (just a question)
