Perhaps the gully allows the meat of of both fingers greater purchase? Perhaps to make up for the loss of the large knurling on others lenses?
Is there video focusing gear that can utilize the space?
Does it allow you to attach a video focus ring to one and allow the other to remain free for direct focus?
I don't know much about video gear.
