Serge, if I remember correctly, paying for a guided tour (some of them anyway) gets you a timed admission to the Vatican without waiting in line, if you ever want to not stand in line.
Ray, you are absolutely correct. We did a guided tour in April a couple of years back which included the Vatican museums. I believe our wait was around 30 minutes which would otherwise have been an easy two hours. We gave it a shot since it was low tourist season and it was not too bad.

Took this one from the top of the stairs of a small chapel. Tight squeeze but this his is a s far back as the walls would allow.
