Re: Nikon Z Images Thread | |
I owned 28/58/105 during my Z era!
I sold off the 28/58 bc I want to give the S lineup a true chance.
The F lenses will always be there for me, if I long for them.
The 105 will take a backseat to the 85S in just a week or two! At least temporarily.
Smaller/Lighter for the most part. No adaptor. Designed for high resolution. Designed for mirrorless. Of course I’m playing the role of a salesman here.
Do the S lenses lack character? I originally thought so. I am going to learn a lot more about them as my busiest two months are just around the corner. The 85S comes right before a few massive weeks for me. Can’t wait to rock 35/85S.
My assistant (who is a college student) has my old D750. She has a two lens kit of just the nifty fifty and a basic WA zoom. I’ll let her rock the 105 a bit - once the 85S arrives. That’ll be fun to see what she does with it. The D750 is really a marvelous camera.
As an aside. I’m very much excited for the next firmware update for Z bodies. Canon just showed off their next update and it’s quite Sony-like! Expecting big things from Nikon, next! Improved eye af and tracking please!
g nite all

I could see the case for the 28E, 58 and 105 as a 3 lens kit, though gapping is longer than I’d like. Still, I wholeheartedly agree, 35/50/85 is a fantastic trio for me. Add the 24-70 mostly for 24mm landscapes or just a convenient zoom.
Still, really liked the compression shooting my girls the other day with the 300/4 AF-S. Thinking of adding a 70-200/2.8, not as fast but adds 200 as well. The new $2000 aren’t worth the cost of admission for me but the VRII or even the old AF-S 80-200 might be a good option...
Open to thoughts from anyone who’s been around the Nikon FX ecosystem longer.

Great sets man. Any of these could go up large format on a wall.
As to color... I never got the “color science” arguments, and I still think science is a misnomer, but Nikon just looks good out of camera. I find myself considering more JPEG for generic shots because it just works.
Also, you’re a bad influence. Stop making me want a 105. I’ve still got the nagging itch from the 58.
IDK, I was originally like you, thought it was all bs. But in the past 6 months, I really became swayed. SOOC, nikon is just so much better/easier. And yes, JPG, if you are getting exposure correct or VERY close - seems to be a huge time saver for me.
haha, well the 105E is an amazing tool, that first image in the most recent set is a huge crop. the lens screams for the Z7 D850 of the world. But once I get my 85S, I may be faced a tough decision. I don't know if I'll be happy with both the 85 and 105 in my bag. I may just rock S glass, aside from my WA 12-24 Art. We shall see.
the 105, you would think it's too long for inside, but it's really not.
at least in my open floor plan 1st floor, with good window light.
35/85 is sublime
85 is my favorite portrait FL
and 50 for backup, or "just one lens" days.
Personally, I really don't need 35 50 85 105
I do like compression. and the 105 is excellent here. however, compression from an 85 is adequate for me, for my needs
with that said, I am a sucker for 1.2 and/or 1.4. I don't expect a 1.4 or 1.2 85mm or 105mm or 135 S from Nikon for a long time. so I'll have to see how the bokeh looks on the 85S.
from what I've seen and read, looks good.
Best,
Ryan

and a few more
Awesome shots Ryan! Just love the 105E and its ability to pull shots from almost nowhere. Love the skin tones...
Thank you so much Charles, nice to hear from you!
