In my testing it seems to have issues with the Sony sensor stack. There is a lot of field curvature and sharpness at wider apertures remained behind my expectations.
Apart from that I enjoyed the very high contrast and exceptional CA correction for a fast medium tele as well as the handling.
At center, it should not make a difference and perhaps field curvature is a characteristic of the lens. The only way to know for sure is to test it on a Leica or Kolari modded Sony body.
BTW, too bad about field curvature. Is it wavy?
I think Jonathan(i.e., Genji) is using the lens on a Leica M10. Perhaps he can look for field curvature and help us sort out why Phillip is seeing so much of it. With regard to center sharpness wide open. I am not surprised it isn't super sharp wide open. Neither are the 40 f/1.2 or 50 f/1.2, but the field curvature is disappointing.
Yes, it's an easy and quick test. Just center focus the subject at infinity distance (make sure that the corners are also at infinity).
Then, without moving the camera, place the focusing point towards the edges and focus again. Compare both captures at center.
With most lenses field curvature is more obvious in the midframe than the corners.
Especially true for (small) lenses with very high vignetting.
Suggestions for testing approach on the M10 ?
