I suspect many of us who got the 400/2.8 fully knew that a 500 or 600 was coming and either, like myself, prefer the 400/2.8, or were fine with getting it as an interim or additional lens. I personally love the fact that I can easily walk around with and handheld the 400 on a Sony body and get closeup medium distance shots or even tighter portraits of smaller animals up close. If I need more reach I can put on the TC and be within the same approximate range of the 600. It’s when you try to go out further when it is not effective since using someone with a 600 can go out a lot further with the 1.4x and the 600 at 1200 definitely beats the 400 at 800. It’s at that point that the 400 owners have to start using a crop body or cropping in post to get the further reach.
I purchased my 400GM knowing full well there would be a 600 within a year. Although costly, I definitely wanted both. With Canon I had the 300/400/600 big whites. Later if there is a 200GM f2 I would be interested, and have a wider spread. The light 400GM sort of takes the place of the purpose of the prior Canon 300II which was to use handheld usually with converters.
