what does this hood do?

The very same job as any other hood. Seems like less than half size of original Samyang hood. Nice find Guy. I could use this hood as replacement for 100-400GM hood which is ridiculously large to have a bit of front lens element protection.

The hood that Guy has referenced is a WA hood. I would not recommend it for a telephoto zoom lens like the 100-400 GM lens. Longer lenses need longer hoods for shading particularly for such long focal lengths.

Been using that exact hood for over 6 months on the 100-400. Works perfectly fine. Now have it on the Samyang 85 as well. The only time I need to break out the large hood is if I'm shooting in inclement weather and trying to keep the lens clean. Guy recommended these a while back, don't remember what post originally. I have one on every single lens I own now. They add protection, some shading, but also keep the lens caps from getting bumped off. Love them
