I’ll put that on the lack of a good, compact 35mm of aperture 1.8 or faster.

There’s been a remarkable turnaround in the past couple of years. Before that, whenever the 40mm focal length was mentioned, even on FM it was commonly dismissed as “weird”, “neither fish nor fowl”, or “too close to 35mm”.
