But do I read that correct that you've only tried it on a NEX-5? So much has changed with Sony focusing algorithms that I don't think you can draw much conclusions from that...
Yes, but in theory contrast detection should be the slowest and most accurate focus mode, pulsing back and forth and looking for contrast increases.
I'm going to switch to FF at some point, the NEX-5 is only for testing the used lenses before I find a good deal on a body. That's why I'm seeing if this is a body problem, a my specific lens problem, or general lens problem. I actually own 2 other Samyangs that don't have this issue

My biggest concern is I had terrible luck with there 50 and the 35 the AF accuracy was jumping around.
lenstation is only $60 at adorama, and firmware makes all the difference. Quickness is the biggest issue with my SY so far, not a big deal as these arent typical sporting lenses.
I've been having focus accuracy issues on my 2nd hand 35mm f1.4. I mostly heard about the firmware fixing speed and AF-C but if I'm understanding you guys, it may fix accuracy as well?
sorry, cant help. Used the 35 1.4 only on R2, R3, and A9, dont think I've ever shot the lens @ infinity. I bought it with a newer firmware to start with, didnt have accuracy issues, however it's not a very quick lens.
Understandable, its a portrait lens. Not many seems to have tested further focus. With more testing, my lens has issues even at like 30 meters away with apertures smaller than f3.5
One other person says they had the same issue on an A7R III and firmware updates didn't help.
