Re: Official Nikon Z6 image & resource hub thread

Hello all Z6 people (and all others who shoot Nikon actually).

I have a somewhat weird question.

I am about to switch from m43 high end Olympus gear, for various reasons and my mind has been all over the place as regards to what system to switch to but it's leaning towards the Z.

Now, I have been looking for long lenses for my Olympus system for some time and if I had kept it I would've gotten a 300mm F4 (600mm FOV) to use for wild life and birding.

While looking at alternatives now my main idea was to get the Z and save up to, the 500PF for example if it ever comes in stock again, or possibly the 300PF with 1.4 and 2.0 tele converters.

However, I may be able to buy a Nikon AF-S NIKKOR ED 500mm 1:4 D for about $2000 and was wondering 1: If the lens would have OK focusing on the Z6 + FTZ adapter and 2: If the lens is worth the $2000 or if I would be better of with 300mm PF and TC 1.4 and 2.0 for example?

When was that version of the lens released? How's the optical quality compared to the newer versions?

***Nikon D lenses won't autofocus with the ftz adapter since these are screw drive lenses and require an in-body motor to drive them.***. See below post for clarification. This statement is not necessarily true for all D lenses. My bad.

I would get either the 300mm PF or the 500mm PF right now to pair with the mirrorless system. The 300mm if you want a nice light travel telephoto that can also get some pretty good reach with the 1.4 & 1.7 tc. The 2x tc doesn't focus well. You may be able to use the 2x for static bird shots but it is useless for birds in flight or anything that requires fast tracking.

The 500mm PF looks great but it is still large enough that I probably wouldn't want to travel with it. If you are just look for an amazing telephoto and don't really care about the added weight savings of the 300mm PF, then I would grab the 500mm PF in a heartbeat.
